The
San Teodoro Aquarium has been created under the initiative
of the municipal administration and of the Istituto delle
Civiltà del mare in an important environmental scientific,
technological and monitoring control context. The goal of
the Aquarium is to develop the necessary socio-cultural and
pedagogical activities and protect the aquatic environment
in the area.
On one side we have the Tavolara Marine Park Capo
Codacavallo and on the other the San Teodoro lake of high
ecological interest with numerous habitat qualities for many
water and land wildlife species that characterise the environmental
biotopes of the area.
For
this reason it seamed scientifically important to organise
a research on exploitation marine park in order to control
and monitor the protection of the environment, about the ecological
and conscious tourism.
The authorities are aware of the maintenance difficulties
of a fully functional aquarium system and apart from keeping
the efficiency of the already existing aquariums they will
proceed to set up an audio-video system that can show the
different undersea life and of the local water areas (virtual
aquarium). To realise this project
any technical or financial offer will be accepted so that
anyone can make more pleasant a journey into our territory.
There are 8 aquariums: five of 3 cubic meters, a central one
of 2,5 cubic meters and 2 columns shaped. The fauna is present
in 3 of the aquariums, the central one and some other two;
the remaining aquariums are to be completed before the summer
of 2002. Our future objective will be the expansion and the
rationalisation of the functional structures with an analysis
and research service for the public and private offices starting
with equipping the present laboratory with right instruments
for controlling the aquariums fauna and monitoring the
coastal environment.
PLAN
OF THE AQUARIUM »
The laboratory in collaboration with the Istituto delle
Civiltà del Mare, the University Departments and
Institutions and also with the Sardinia Municipal Health Council
Office will be able to amplify its research for the public
service.
